ToggleSainik Awasiya Mahavidyalaya: One of Nepal's Top Residential Schools
For families across Nepal looking for a disciplined, affordable, and academically strong institution, Sainik Awasiya Mahavidyalaya, Bhaktapur (SAMB) consistently stands out as one of the country’s most respected residential schools and colleges. Operated under the Nepali Army Welfare Fund, SAMB has built a reputation over nearly five decades for combining structured discipline with quality education — making it a popular choice among both army families and civilians.
At Pratima Academy, we regularly guide students preparing for entrance examinations at institutions like SAMB. Here’s everything you need to know about the college, its history, programs, and what makes it unique.
A Legacy Spanning Almost 50 Years
SAMB’s roots go back to 2035 B.S. (1978 AD), when it was established as Suping Multiple Campus in Bhimphedi, Makawanpur — a joint initiative of the Nepali Army and Tribhuvan University. The campus relocated to its current home in Sallaghari, Bhaktapur, in Chaitra 2042 B.S., and from 14th Poush 2043 B.S. onward, it has operated entirely under the Nepali Army.
The institution went through a couple of name changes along the way — from Suping Multiple Campus to Birendra Sainik Awasiya Mahavidyalaya (BSAMV), and finally, in Shrawan 2067 B.S., to its present name: Sainik Awasiya Mahavidyalaya, Bhaktapur (SAMB).
SAMB shifted to co-education in 2046/47 B.S. and has since grown into a large, multi-stream institution serving thousands of students.
Motto and Guiding Philosophy
SAMB operates under the motto “ज्ञानेन परमो सेवा” (Gyanena Paramo Sewa) — meaning “Imparting knowledge is the greatest service.” This philosophy shapes the institution’s approach to holistic development, blending academics with discipline, sports, and character building.
Academic Programs
SAMB offers a complete academic pathway from school level through to bachelor’s degrees:
- School level (Grades 6–10): Affiliated with the National Examination Board (NEB), with a fully English-medium curriculum.
- +2 (Grades 11–12): Streams in Science, Management, and Humanities, with both morning and day shift options.
- Bachelor’s level (Tribhuvan University affiliation):
- Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) — running since 2070 B.S.
- B.Sc. in Microbiology — running since 2069 B.S.
This range allows students to complete a significant part of their academic journey — from secondary school to graduation — within a single, familiar institutional environment.
Admission Process
Admission to SAMB is competitive and merit-based. For instance, Grade 6 admissions require:
- A minimum aggregate of 50% marks (C+ grade / GPA 2.4) in Grade 5 annual or trimester examinations from a government-recognized school.
- The applicant must be under 12 years of age as of the 1st of Baisakh in the admission year.
- Candidates must pass a written entrance examination, followed by a merit-based selection process.
Both children of Nepal Army personnel (serving and retired) and civilian applicants are eligible to apply, making SAMB accessible to a wide range of families seeking a disciplined, English-medium education.
Application forms are typically available from the Principal’s Office or downloadable from the official website, bsamv.edu.np, during the announced admission period.
Campus Life and Facilities
SAMB’s campus in Sallaghari is built to support both residential (boarding) and day-scholar students, with infrastructure including:
- Hostel facilities for both boys and girls
- Smart classrooms from Grade VIII through bachelor’s level, equipped with OHPs, computers, and internet access
- Labs and libraries supporting science and microbiology programs
- 24/7 ambulance service, with additional medical support available through Bhaktapur District Hospital, Dr. Iwamura Hospital, and Chhauni Military Hospital
- Psychological counseling, provided by trained subject teachers who double as student counselors
The school also has a strong sports culture, with active programs in basketball, cricket, football, gymnastics, taekwondo, volleyball, athletics, and kabaddi — reflecting the institution’s emphasis on physical discipline alongside academics.
Why SAMB Stands Out
A few factors consistently draw families to SAMB:
- Affordability with quality — SAMB has built its reputation on delivering reliable, structured education at a cost accessible to a broad range of families, not just army personnel.
- Discipline-driven environment — As a military-affiliated institution, SAMB instills a strong sense of order, routine, and accountability in its students from an early age.
- Continuity of education — Few institutions in Nepal allow students to progress seamlessly from Grade 6 through to a bachelor’s degree on one campus.
- Branch presence nationwide — SAMB-affiliated institutions extend to cities like Pokhara, Dharan, Surkhet, Kailali, Chitwan, and Bardibas, broadening access beyond the Kathmandu Valley.
Preparing for SAMB's Entrance Exam
Given the competitive nature of admissions — particularly at the Grade 6 entry level — many students benefit from structured preparation covering the core subjects tested in the entrance examination. At Pratima Academy, we work with students to build the academic foundation and exam confidence needed to succeed in entrance tests at institutions like SAMB, helping them put their best foot forward when it matters most.
For the latest admission notices, fee structures, and academic calendars, prospective students and parents are encouraged to check SAMB’s official website at bsamv.edu.np directly, as policies and cutoffs are updated periodically.
